One of the items on my list for years to see, and an absolute before I leave for NYC (this weekend), has been the Farnsworth House in Plano, IL. I pre-paid my tickets online, and reserved a ZipCar for yesterday only to awaken to dark skies and rain. My heart sank, as I sat yesterday morning drinking my French Roast, with the doplar radar animating a giant swath of precipitation across my laptop. As I thought to myself what and idiot I was to wait until the very last minute, I accepted that I cannot change the weather, and I cannot get my money back, so I may as well go and make the best of it. My friend had a brighter outlook than I did as we walked through the rain to get to the car.
Well, by the time we drove the sixty miles, and putzed around Main Street in Plano (not really exciting, but a few cool photo ops), we pulled into a small parking lot in the middle of a corn field. There was a lovely white modern visitors center, and my friends optimism prevailed… The sun was out. The tour was absolutely fantastic! Pictures don’t do this Mies Van der Rohe masterpiece justice, it simply must be experienced to fully appreciate how incredible this place it. Completed in 1951, you can see my flickr tour here, and read about the house on their website.
