Found this shot of the pay phones on the “L” platform at Adams/Wabash (when was the last time you used a pay phone from April that I had marked for posting, but hadn’t gotten around to it yet. As I was prepping the shot to upload to flickr, I noticed that the receiver on the right had something written on it. Close inspection reveals that some paranoid person attached a photocopied label that says “This Phone Is Tapped” and what appears to be further text including a highlighted section below in small typeface. I am somewhat amazed by how much detail I actually captured given that I was probably 30-40 feet from my subject, zoomed in at 80mm. Way to go D-80!
On a separate note… I am pleased to announce that two years ago today, I quit smoking! Those that know me, know this was a pretty big deal, as I had been smoking for more than half my life. Cigarettes and I had always had a love/hate relationship, and I had committed to myself that I would not be smoking on my 40th birthday. To be fair, I have on two occasions partially smoked a cigarette while in a state of drunken stuper, but I have not had any desire to pick it up again. One of the things I am looking forward to the most is smoke free bars in NYC. I know that come January, Chicago will join the ranks of other civilized cities and become smoke free as well, but in the mean time, I just don’t want the temptation. To my readers that are smokers, I know what you are thinking… “Another f’ing ex-smoker on his high-horse!” Its OK, I was there once too, and while I miss many aspects of smoking, having quit, I feel a freedom I didn’t know before. Hard to explain, but it is worth it.
