Central Camera is a store to be experienced. It’s not about the lowest price, but about a really interesting, photographically knowledgeable, and very attentive sales staff. At this location (230 S Wabash) since 1929, this is retailing as it was early last century, and there are few places left to experience this type of shopping. As a camera newbie, and a digital one at that, they have always taken the time to help me figure out what I need. Unfortunately, their website is also a thing of the past, and isn’t very user friendly. It has the feel of being locked into contract with a third party vendor putting together a website shell for them to update. Too Bad.
I have long been fascinated by the sign outside (from the late 1940s), and even though I live only blocks away, until now, I have never been able to get night shots that I felt were worth posting. Well, thanks to the D80 and a sweet Manfrotto tripod, I think I have gotten a few decent shots. The challenge is that next door is a liquor store that is very bright, has a lot of people coming and going, and creates a lot of traffic/parking issues in front of the camera store. I always seem to live in fear that the store will close, and the sign will go away… But for 108 years, they have managed to hold on.
