While driving down Golf Road on assignment, somewhere in the hinterlands of Schaumburg over the weekend, I saw this golden box along the side of the road. It’s bright gold shiny-ness forced me to swerve and turn into the parking lot for a closer look. There stood a two story, partially sunken, glass box of a building, surrounded by what is essentially a moat of gravel with trees, the second floor larger than the first. It is not often that one sees a building of gleaming gold, especially a glass one. Given that the building houses mostly dental offices, with all those gold crowns and fillings, I guess the building is apropos.
My guess would be that this was constructed in about 1982, an era known for unusual office park type buildings. The biggest flaw in the design?… I don’t think that the reflection of the bland, run of the mill, suburban strip malls surrounding the area were taken into consideration. Clearly the architect was trying to make a statement, but I am not sure this was the right statement.
