I have spent the past six plus years working in the Chicago Daily News Building on Madison and Canal. As part of a major systems overhaul, they are installing sprinklers into the nearly 80-year-old building one floor at a time. This past fall it was time for my floor to move to temporary space while the work was done on our floor. In stark contrast to the very modern interior of my office floor, the temporary space was a relic from the 1980s, and has elements of the original building including the intact vintage restrooms. Upon seeing the men’s room for the first time, I simply knew I had to take some time and shoot the space. I find it interesting that the basics of the pubic restroom remains little changed to this day. Except of course we no longer use inch and a half thick slabs of marble to divide the stalls, or mahogany with nickle fittings for stall doors.
I will be leaving my place of employment at the end of May as part of a mass lay-off. The quirkiness of the building will be missed; perhaps the next workplace (where ever it is) will be as inspiring.
