Mies Van der Rohe’s philosophy was “Less is More”. This I am sure, is not quite what he was thinking when he designed the Post Office at Federal Center. When I walk by, I have often thought about what it looked like when it opened in the early 70s. Was it kept sparse and minimalist at the beginning? Or, was it just as cluttered back then? This space is a good example of the realities of design. No matter how good the design, or how pretty it is… It still must be functional and practical. The clutter of the Post Office used to bug me, and I used to think that Mies would be pretty pissed about it as well. Now I just feel it has that “lived in” look, and I think Mies would agree.
