In yet another loss caused by big business, Cary’s Footwear has closed down as of this past weekend. Cary’s Footwear you ask? Yes, this little holdout from the past was located on Wabash next to the entrance of the Palmer House Hilton. The Palmer House is undergoing a major reno, and it looks like Cary’s is one of the victims is going to get a facelift in the reno.(See comments regarding the future of Cary’s). I always feel a sense of loss when another one of these little independents disappears from the street. There is still Altman’s Shoes on Monroe. Unfortunately, just as I contributed to the end of Tower Records by no longer buying CDs, I buy my shoes at DSW.

(Update-02.13.07: It appears the owner of Cary’s left a comment regarding the future of the store, and it is bright. Maybe I will have to turn from my DSW ways, and check them out when they reopen in the fall.)
