The Fisher Building (1896) sits gracefully across from the Old Colony Building (1894) on Van Buren between S. Plymouth and S. Dearborn, separated by the “L”. But for a very brief period after they were completed, there were no “L” tracks above (see photos of the Fisher and Old Colony before the “L” tracks came along in 1897). These two buildings make up part of what is a significant collection of historic early skyscrapers that are along Dearborn. The area was the heart of the business district in the late nineteenth century (before it moved to LaSalle St.). The Fisher was restored and made into apartments (I love how they used the vintage pic without the “L” on their website) a few years back, the Old Colony is in desperate need of restoration. Both are added to the list of City Landmarks in the summer of 1978. I love the round corners on the Old Colony.
My shots were taken on a recent sunny day, and the reflection shots are of the little mid-century modern bank building (which is unfortunately empty at the moment) on the SW corner of Van Buren and Dearborn.
BTW… Thank you all for the kind comments on Wednesdays post. It helps me to know what all of you like, and will guide me in the forward shift of my blog. Not to worry about the written commentary on my images, I will retain it.
Feel free to continue with feedback and comments…
