Standing on the SW corner of Grant Park is Magdalena Abakanowicz’s gift to the City of Chicago. Not a tidy package, but 106 cast iron shells of tall people from a distant land. She made the offering to Chicago, and Da’Mare jumped at the opportunity. As I understand it; the two of them (and their entourage) drove around the city last year looking at possible sites, she liked this one. To follow are several shots, a few more are on my flickr.
My experience was on this past Friday, an overcast shadow less day. I did my best with the terrible lighting, and will go back and do it again with loads of sunshine.
OK, so there was a tiny patch of blue above. It wasn’t where the light was coming from, but made for a nice backdrop to the shapes surrounding me.
The immediate sense I got from these humanoid shells was that they are wandering aimlessly, like so many people do in life.
I was captured by just how varied the color of rusted cast iron can be.
I couldn’t help but chuckle at the juxtaposition of the sculpture and adverts for luxury residential. With thousands of new residents moving into the surrounding area, a new residential neighborhood has literally been created before our eyes. It would have never have happened, just ten years ago. Agora is a nice addition.
