Yes, yes, the balconies at Marina City are among the most ubiquitous subjects of photography in the city (the Omphalos being another), but even though I have dozens and dozens of images of them, I cannot always resist the temptation to take more. Such was the case last week when I was off during a weekday, the sun was shining, and I was walking north on Dearborn. Each time I take more images of the balconies, I try to capture an angle I haven’t taken before, or improve on one that I have.
So, if you are rolling your eyes (I know you are), get over it, and enjoy a few more shots of ubiquity. I like this first shot because of the light/dark action going on as well at the look that the two buildings are only inches apart.
They recently painted the balconies at Marina City with a glossy black enamel, however occasionally you can pick one out that hasn’t been done yet, as in the non-shiny one just above the center.
You can tell which balconies are covered in green carpet by the reflection on the underside of the one above it.
The architectural relationship between Bertrand Goldberg’s twin towers and Mies Van der Rohe’s IBM Building (his final commission) is actually much closer than you would think.
There is a whole lotta balcony action going on here. There are a combined total of 1280 individual balconies at Marina City, the shear number of which is mind boggling at times.
