I made a final visit to the site where the lesser known Wirt Dexter building stood to capture what remained on Saturday to capture what remained four days after the fire. (I promise, this is the last post on this topic.) When we arrived at the site, they were just getting started on the Wabash Facade. I missed them taking the George Diamond sign off of the front (but WVallen didn’t) but watched as the giant claw began to chew away at the facade.
While standing there, I took this shot of the former Sawyer Secretarial College sign, still intact, and as if nothing had happened. I don’t know when the secretarial college closed, but when was the last time you knew somebody with Secretary as job title?
Standing in front of the Pacific Garden Mission on State, I was able to zoom in on the rear demolition. Debris is being hauled out under the “L”. It is a bit eerie to see the building facade across Wabash through the remains of the Dexter.
When pulling the north wall down, there was some damage to a rear building next door. You can also see clearly how the building next door is all that is holding up the remaining portion of the brick wall.
