The CTA quietly announced the closure of my subway station last week. This will now force me to walk a whole block to catch the train (I know, boo hoo for me). The closure is to modify the State Street subway platform for connecting tunnels and track to link the Red and Blue Line trains as part of the insanely crazy idea that you can have express trains to O’Hare run on the same tracks as regular trains. Currently, the State Street subway platform is the longest continuous platform in the world, I wonder if that claim will be lost (like it matters much).
Today’s pictures aren’t my best work, but I wanted to bring a few parting images to you before this section is closed on Sunday night for an undisclosed amount of time (read; years). True to CTA form of poor planning, they just finished cleaning and re-lamping all of the lighting at Washington/State. Giving riders a whole two weeks to see where they are going before it is closed. Smart… Even smarter if they gut and rebuild this station like Lake Street.
Another true to form for the CTA, this sign is incorrect, and obviously has been for a long time. This is the north set of stairs to the Washington mezzanine, from which you can take stairs to Washington or Madison, but not Monroe.
Shot through the side gate
The rarely used north stairs. I take these stairs when I am getting off of the first car of a crowded train. This exit has perhaps 50 people a day use it. I will bet Channel 7 would be thrilled to know they are paying for an unseen ad.
Looking down the subway platform, 95th Street train in the distance. It has always been a bit odd to me that the platform has curves to it… The street above doesn’t.
