Today is the third time Random Mondays that has shifted to Tuesday in the last month, so perhaps this is where it will be on a more long term basis. Today’s randomness was shot in the past week.
First up; I don’t usually put my favorite shot of the day up first, but I couldn’t help myself. I love this shot featuring rays of light gleaming off of the AMA building on N State Street and Grand. I also love that there is so much activity going on, including the airliner just coming into view above the black condo building on the right. I shot this (about 20 times) yesterday evening from the corner of State and Madison.
The street furniture on State Street was recently repainted for the first time in the ten years they have been a part of the streetscape. This was overdue, as the subway entrances, which looked so nice when I moved here in 1999, were beginning to show rust and wear. It took them several months to paint everything, but clearly they took no pride in their work. The overspray on the sign is just one of the signs of poor quality work. I wonder if it was the same company that did a crappy job on the sidewalk repairs last year.
Ceres stands faceless atop the 45 stories of the Board of Trade building at the foot of LaSalle Street. When they put her up there, she was higher up than any other place in the city, and the builders thought she wouldn’t be surpassed. She is holding a sheath of wheat and a bag of money. I love the pseudo breast like domes.
Standing in front of the W Hotel on Adams Street, looking through the frosted glass to the other side of the street.
Rush hour suburbanites as they rush to escape the big bad city that feeds their families (but I digress). This shot taken from the Monroe St Bridge. I didn’t intend to feature the Sun Times building when I shot this.
The arcade at Gateway Center II (1968) is a nice example of modernism that has held its own over the decades. I will however take exception to the Canal Street side of all of the buildings that make up the Gateway Center. Their addresses are officially on Canal Street, but the front door if you will, is on the river, leaving the service and freight areas as the street front.
