I hadn’t planned to continue on the changes going on at Macy’s today, but standing at my window last night, I noticed that (what has become) the trademark green lights on the front of the Marshall Fields Building are no longer green but white. Installed when Target remodeled the State Street store to the tune of 118 million dollars in 2003, the lights have become a part of the streetscape and can be seen from several different directions.
Before I get to the new look, here is what they looked like yesterday (photo from February).
And last night…
A closer shot reveals just how over-lit the new look is…
In this close up of the front entrance, you can see the new awnings with the Macy’s star.
The view of Block 37 is brighter now. Not sure how I feel about it.
Oh, and be sure to check out the WVallen’s Photomapping Project. For the month of September, he will be posting the location of my posts along with several other of his favorite photographers. One of my images from each post will be mapped.

Macy’s really must be enjoy bastardizing good stores and rubbing it in people’s faces.

Ugh! Too much! The white lighting makes the building look harsh and ghastly!
Macy’s should be ashamed of itself!

Yeah, it is pretty ghastly. I am pretty sure when Target initiated the lighting to begin with, they intentionally overcompensated for the fact that green is a dark color and needs additional candlepower to show up. Now it is just too bright.

They could have at least made the lighting even and not splotchy. And it clashes rather badly with the warmer lighting at ground level. Granted, I’m sure we’re all predisposed to disliking anything Macy’s dares to do, but even objective people must admit it doesn’t look good.

This is a real horror! Just dreadful, along with all of the other Macy ideas.
Clearly, these people have no sense of beauty, as well as no sense of history.
I hope they lose more than they ever feared.
What new ugliness can they impose on Chicago???
