A few weeks back I was standing at the corner of State and Madison and noticed the light falling on the buildings around me was particularly good at the moment. That prompted me to pull the camera out of my bag, and proceed to shoot about 40 images of the light falling on the buildings along Madison between State and Dearborn. Follow me as I take you through the next ten minutes in my head.
First I was captured by the light and shadow falling on the corner of Carson’s across the street from where I stood. It is times like this that the magic of Louis Sullivan’s highly concentrated ornamentation really stands out.
After a few shots of Carson’s, I noticed the Sears sign in silhouette against reflected light on the Chase Building.
Seeing the light as it fell on the Chase Building, lead me to cross the street for this…
And then this….
Standing there at that point, I turn and see the street light backlit by the “fin” on the corner of 1 S. Dearborn.
Turning a bit further, and looking up, the parking levels of 1 S. Dearborn are hidden behind these vertical glass wedges, which glow at night.
In continuation my sweep around the block, sunlight is kissing the corners of the bay windows on the Chicago Building (1905).
And finally my camera goes back to the column of light on the corner of Carson’s.
