Walking home last week, I pulled my camera out and start shooting. This is a common occurrence (especially when the weather is good, which last Thursday was fantastic), to just meander my way home taking photos. Standing at the intersection of Wacker and Monroe, I took in the sights surrounding me. This has sparked a thought, “Why not start a series of posts focusing on shots taken from various intersections in the Loop”? There are so many things to see from various intersections in the Loop, which is one of the greatest joys of living in this neighborhood.
So, today is the first of the series. I do not know yet if this will be a weekly thing, or just occasional, but I created a new category for it (Intersections), and will randomly choose intersections to stand in and take shots of what surrounds me. I also will welcome suggestions of your favorite intersections. (The boundaries of which will be the Chicago River to the north and west, Lake Michigan to the east, and Roosevelt Road to the south). It may take me a while to get to them all, but I will eventually get there.

Standing at the base of the Hyatt Center, what has become a ubiquitous shot is one I never grow tired of.
The Hartford Insurance Building at 100 S Wacker was completed in 1961. What is a bit unusual for this building is that the curtain wall is set behind the exterior skeleton. It was actually quite ahead of it’s time, by setting the windows back, “ledges” were created at each floor providing shade for the offices which saves on energy costs as well as easy access to the window washers. A variation of this technique is often proposed today with the use of “fins” or other shade inducing forms.
