Lake Point Tower has the distinction of being the only residential building in Chicago built east of Lake Shore Drive. I don’t know the history of how that came to be, but I am sure there was a lot of grease involved. This was the first commission for architects John Heinrich and George Schipporeit. Clearly they were students of none other than the master himself, Meis van der Rohe. Completed in 1968, it was at 600 feet in height, the tallest residential tower in the world at the time.
While walking along the Outer Drive on Sunday, the light was just right for some close ups.
The reflection is of North Pier (Yet another condo conversion, underway).
The round top houses a restaurant.
Looking on the left (third row down), I can see that somebody has the nerve to have a tacky Home Depot torchere lamp. The rich may have money, but they don’t always have taste. (Click the image into Flickr if you aren’t able to make it out.)
